Travel to Sabah (formerly North Borneo) and one must not miss the chance to see sunset. Many travelers love sunset. It tranquilized our vibrant spirit and calmed our soul. Sunset make us contemplate about God and his vast universe. It is not only beautiful; but awesome and inspiring.
Different travel magazines justified different places as their preferred top sunset locations in the world. There are many wonderful places to observe sunset, but yet many times, Sabah is mentioned as one of them.
Sunset is the daily disappearance of the sun below the western horizon as a result of the earth rotation. Sunset creates unique and often intense glow of orange and red colors of the sun and surrounding sky. Sunset colors are more brilliant than sunrise because the evening air contains more particles than morning. Because of these airborne particles, the ray of the sunlight with shorter wavelength such as blue and green are filtered out leaving the longer wavelength to reach the viewers eyes.
So where are the best places to see sunset? Of course it would have to be in the west coast of Sabah because the sun always set on the west and rise from the east. That’s common sense. Well, we have a very long coastline from the tip of Borneo in Kudat right down to Labuan in the south. All these locations produced good spots for watching sunset if you decide to travel to Sabah. Personally I feel these four are the best places to see sunset.
Tanjung Aru is the most popular travel destination when we talk about watching sunset in Sabah. It is just a few minute drives from Kota Kinabalu (formerly known as Jesselton) city center. Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah. The good thing with this place is its long coastline; the Tanjung Aru Beach. Nearby there are some bars and footstalls serving coconut juice. During clear day you could literally see the sun sink.
Kokol Hill is a cool place to watch sunset. I mean; literally cool place because it is 2000 over feet above sea level. It became much cooler during cloudy days but that will spoil the moment because we are talking about watching sunset. We need clear or partially clouded sky to watch the glowing sunset. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes to reach here from the city. Kokol Haven Resort is the best place in Kokol Hill to watch the setting sun.
As we travel north to the Tip of Borneo, the sea here are crystal clear and beautiful. During the day, it is a beachgoers paradise. This place is known as Simpang Mengayau in the Kudat district. It takes about 3 hours to reach this place by car. Unobstructed by any land mass, sunset watching is a good experience here.
My favorite place to watch sunset is at Mantanani Island. It is in between Kudat and Kota Kinabalu in the district of Kota Belud. Mantanani Island like most of the islands in Sabah is a very beautiful island. This island is home to several species of birds; among them the flightless Philippines Megapode. But watching sunset here is indeed such a delightful experience. When you look up into the heavens, it seems the sky had been painted.
So here are all the four fantastic places to watch sunset when you travel to Sabah. Many more places in Sabah can offer travelers nice places to watch sunset but these are the four locations I chose. But I have to stress this old cliche; beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder!
